When I was 6, my parents moved temporarily from the UK to Israel.
I didn’t speak a word of Hebrew.
I still remember the trauma of my first day in my new school, being taught by a teacher speaking “gibberish”.
Worse still, I couldn’t communicate at all with my classmates. It was very isolating.
Just three months later, though, I was chatting away in the new language completely fluently. No one could tell I was a new immigrant. I even had a perfect accent.
Almost total immersion.
Not only did I spend every day completely surrounded by Hebrew-speakers in school, but my parents hired a teenager to speak Hebrew with me in the afternoons as well.
The language was impossible to avoid…
I heard the same words and patterns again and again, which made them easier to understand.
It helped them sink in, too.
And because I had so many opportunities to speak, I gradually lost my inhibitions.
Before long, I was speaking at native level.
